May 17, 2008 (Saturday): Spring Birdathon to Benefit Indiana Dunes!

For over 20 years now, teams of birders have scoured the May migration woodlands, wetlands, prairies, and lakeshore along Lake Michigan to record our plentiful bird species all for charity. These birdathons, involving teams representing conservation organizations, coming together in the spirit of friendly competition and birding to have fun and raise money for their sponsoring organizations. Visitors to the Indiana Dunes enjoy a wide variety of programming and special events. Many of these would not be possible if it were not for the Friends. In addition, the majority are offered at no cost to our visitors.

For the first time, our intrepid team from the Indiana DNR will be setting out to record our goal of 140 species to raise money for the Friends of Indiana Dunes. On Saturday, May 17th our team will be starting at 2:30am for owls, whippoorwills, and nighthawks, and race towards the finish line by 7pm, picking up raptors, shorebirds, and warblers along the way.

How can you help raise money for the Friends of Indiana Dunes? Its easy. Simply fill out the form (which you can download by clicking here) and send it in by May 14th (do it today, while it is on your mind!). Last year, some teams saw between 85 and 160 species of birds. If you had pledged a nickel for 100 species, you would have 10.00... you get the idea! If you want to challenge our team with an extra $5.00 for a specific bird, maybe your favorite rare bird, please do so. This is a fun way to raise money for a very worthwhile cause.

The full list of birds will be sent to all that pledge, and allow us to set some goals for next year. Oh yes, as always, your contribution is tax deductible as allowed by law. Thank you!
